I took up photography in 2020 as part of my ‘rewirement’ after a 40-year research and teaching career. I once imagined I could motivate social change for sustainability using ecological science and numbers. Now I think photographs may work better. They remind us of nature’s beauty and connections between one another and our shared places – all key invitations to care and regenerate.
I try to bring a beginner’s mind to photography’s technical and aesthetic challenges, and patience to overcome its frustrations and exacting disciplines.
OurSight has encouraged me “wander off” – to transition from seeing and representing an exact world through a scientist’s lens, to reflecting a more emotional view of my inner world, my bewilderment, my hope, and life’s mystery.
